“The Hawk Bear and Hawk were two of the first bronzes in the Winged Bear series. Gene was exploring the idea that if a man dressed up in a bear costume and proceeded to do a thunderbird dance, this is what he might look like.”

As artists, the collaboration of Gene and Rebecca Tobey was a breath of fresh air. The two created a style of art that is entirely unique and distinctive. Because of its ingenious simplification of sculptural imagery, and use of sgraffito, the Tobey design is instantly recognizable. Gene & Rebecca created their own symbolic language pulling from Native American imagery and their own experiences.
