“Friends in a Storm and Partners came from an experience Gene had while riding his horse Hot Shot on the plains outside of Casper, Wyoming. A sudden rainstorm came up, and since there are no trees there, Gene threw his jacket over his saddle to keep it dry, and climbed down under the horse. Hot Shot was one of those rare horses that will allow a person to crouch beneath him, and his only reaction was one of looking down at Gene, as if he was saying ‘Hey, you’re supposed to be on top, not me!’ Across the horse’s back is a highly polished eagle with wings spread down the horse’s sides. The drawings are of horses and riders, hunters, wolves and buffalos.”
As artists, the collaboration of Gene and Rebecca Tobey was a breath of fresh air. The two created a style of art that is entirely unique and distinctive. Because of its ingenious simplification of sculptural imagery, and use of sgraffito, the Tobey design is instantly recognizable. Gene & Rebecca created their own symbolic language pulling from Native American imagery and their own experiences.
