Orion was inspired by all of our loved ones, family or friends, that are unfortunately no longer with us or live far away—but when you think of them, you can’t help but smile because of the beautiful memories you have of them. The gold star in Orion’s hand is held close to his heart, just like his loved ones. He is looking up at the night sky and making a wish, in their memory, on a shooting star that is seen coming down the back of his head. He has a gorgeous midnight blue patina to mimic the color of the galaxy and the Orion constellation is denoted with the patina on his back. The stripe running vertically down his back represents the Milky Way. His little feet have sgraffito designs to represent his many journeys throughout his life. One of my most heart felt sculptures. After the big and little dipper, it’s the next star constellation many of us learn to find in the night sky. He is looking up smiling and holding a star. The patina is a night sky with a galaxy on his back, the stars are falling on him. The star he’s holding represents his loved ones who have passed on and he is holding them in his hand/heart. The symbol on his head represented intellect….though some see a falling star. On the back is a design representing the spirit of the bear. I include this on many of my sculptures. During the making of Orion, I lost a very dear friend who ended his life. I sat weeping on my studio floor while sculpting Orion. The face of Orion is my beautiful white rescue cat (Amos aka Moose) who greets us every night with a smile and his eyes closed, paw extended….a bit of whimsy.

John Maisano is fascinated by the artistic designs found in Celtic, African, Inuit and Tribal art which he incorporates into his sculptures. Each sculpture is inscribed with intricate designs derived from natural forms and structures. His sculptures range in size from treasures that can be held in the palm of one’s hand to larger-than-life monuments. His work focuses on graceful interpretations of animals shaped in a way that captures the life force of each animal and transforms it into something more.
