Her hair is worn in the traditional double braid, a style that a Hopi woman begins to wear on her wedding day. Among the Hopi, we are a matriarchal people—lineage flows from the mother, and in our traditional way, the women hold the home as well as the seeds planted each spring. After marriage, it is the man who comes to live with his wife’s family, honoring the strength and central place of women in Hopi life. She has no face, which symbolizes the egalitarian society of the Hopi people. She represents a people, not an individual. The Hopi thought is: One Mind, one Body and one Spirit.
