The bison, for John Maisano, wasn’t so much of a story as it was a feeling. He wanted to convey the ancient wisdom of the animal, and spiritual significance, by the use of the designs on the belly. Swirling designs intertwining with each other represent it’s life through the ages as it roamed the plains and provided so much for the Native Americans. With the pose he wanted to capture its majesty and power, standing firm and solid overlooking the high plains, head held high and gazing into an endless future.
John Maisano is fascinated by the artistic designs found in Celtic, African, Inuit and Tribal art which he incorporates into his sculptures. Each sculpture is inscribed with intricate designs derived from natural forms and structures. His sculptures range in size from treasures that can be held in the palm of one’s hand to larger-than-life monuments. His work focuses on graceful interpretations of animals shaped in a way that captures the life force of each animal and transforms it into something more.
