“El Baile del Oso is Spanish for “the dance of the bear”. This fellow, with his head tilted to the sky and arms wide spread looks like a dancing bear, and in some ways, he is reminiscent of Charles Shultz’ cartoons of Snoopy when he dances about with joy! …The polished figures on his chest represent the spirits one senses when spending time in the canyon lands of the Southwest…Call them ghosts, spirits, or what you will, Gene has created his vision of what he feels. The hand on the bear’s belly is seen throughout the world in aboriginal art as a sort of signature – a “Kilroy was here” mark of sorts. We use it as our signature and as an interesting design element on our sculptures.”
As artists, the collaboration of Gene and Rebecca Tobey was a breath of fresh air. The two created a style of art that is entirely unique and distinctive. Because of its ingenious simplification of sculptural imagery, and use of sgraffito, the Tobey design is instantly recognizable. Gene & Rebecca created their own symbolic language pulling from Native American imagery and their own experiences.
