“Heading south from Crested Butte (in Colorado on a visit), we came around a curve, and there, in a stand of trees alongside the highway, were a dozen golden eagles perched on the leafless upper branches…As the birds flew aloft, their wings beat against the air, and sunlight danced across their backs. Eclipse of the Sun came out of that experience. Sunlight is indicated in the highly polished area on the eagle’s back. The simplicity of the design, with the wings together forming an opening, is startling.”

As artists, the collaboration of Gene and Rebecca Tobey was a breath of fresh air. The two created a style of art that is entirely unique and distinctive. Because of its ingenious simplification of sculptural imagery, and use of sgraffito, the Tobey design is instantly recognizable. Gene & Rebecca created their own symbolic language pulling from Native American imagery and their own experiences.
